Oh nuts!

I'm working on my tasks for the evening with my mouth watering. One of the items on my list tonight was to make cinnamon-sugar roasted nuts and the yummy smell is wafting from the oven, teasing my smelling sense and making me ever so ready for them to be done.
I make one batch of walnuts and one batch of almonds. Hubby prefers the walnuts and I prefer the almonds, but both are delicious. I only make them this time of year, though Hubs always asks for me to start making them year round.
They are super easy to make and if you'd like the recipe, check out my post from last year or set up an account with Tasty Kitchen and check my recipes under username MrsCJK.

If you like cinnamon, sugar, and nuts, you wont be disappointed.

Just call me Chicken...

Because that's what I was like most of today- a chicken with my head cut off, running around and bumping into things.

Well, the bumping into things is figurative, but seriously, the first part of the work day was crazy and I swear I was doing a bunch of things at once for most of the morning. Fortunately, I was in a pretty good mood and by the time lunch rolled around, things were slowing down.

Of course, then quitting time came and it was time to come home, where there is still plenty to do before we travel north. I didn't get as much done this weekend as I would have liked, but that's pretty typical. My to-do list isn't looking too scary though, so I'm sure I'll be able to manage everything before we leave.

I've got a good start and taking it one item at a time is important or I might go crazy! Today I mailed off most of my Christmas cards and have just a few left that need addresses and will be mailed tomorrow, I wrapped a few gifts, and I made peppermint bark for day two of the Holiday in the Break Room at work.

I could be feeling stressed, but mostly I'm just feeling blessed. It is, after all, the most wonderful time of the year and it's better to be busy at a job than not have one and to have to prepare for a trip than not be able to go at all. The days are often a whirlwind, but I'm holding on tight to what's important. I hope you're able to do the same this Christmas season.

Just a little bit...

Hubs and I are going to be in Vermont celebrating the season from the 19th-27th, so I decided that doing the whole shebang in the decorating department this year would just cause me a bunch of stress before we leave. Of course I couldn't go completely without, so I've brought out a few of my favorite bits so we can enjoy a touch of merry around the condo before we head north.

First there is the dining room table. We rarely eat here, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't look nice and festive.
I love these plates. I bought them at Home Goods last year. I have two with doves and two with Christmas trees.
The napkins are from Anichini (the company my Mom works for). I bought them with a gift card Hubs and I received as a wedding gift. They add just a bit of glimmer to the place settings.
The garland on the centerpiece is usually used on the tree, but since we aren't getting a tree this year, I've used it here.
I got the birds at Pier One. I love them.
Although I haven't put much out, all the most important stuff is placed about. First there is the Advent calendar my Mom gave me when I first moved away from home. I talked about it on Monday when I found a surprise in day seven's door.
This angel was a wedding gift. I think she's absolutely beautiful. This year she has a spot on the kitchen counter. I tried taking a full length photo, but I couldn't seem to get one I liked. So here are some close ups of her top and bottom halves separately instead.

One of the most important pieces in a sentimental sense is this little music box. The bear skates around when the music plays. My Mom gave it to me when I moved away from home because she knew it was one of my favorite decorations. I don't know what it is about it, but I just love it.
Finally, one of the most important decorations for me is the cresh. When I was a kid, it was always special to be able to put Baby Jesus in His place and often times we added our own little characters to the scene (like trolls, handmade angels, and at least once a basketball trophy sat atop the manger). I look forward to having kids someday and teaching them the importance of the birth of Jesus through this Christmas tradition.
The decorations at our house may be few and simple this year, but our reasons for joy are abundant and my faith in the reason for the season is greater than ever.

Lucketts Christmas Design House

On Friday morning, Mom and I headed to Lucketts to see their Christmas Design House. Although their Design Houses are usually a little over the top for me, it's awesome to browse and be inspired.
I really like the hanging... things. Hm, I'm not sure what to call them, but I like them lots!
Front door... my Mom wondered at this point if Dad would allow her to use pulled back curtains on their front porch and I said probably not.
I love the chair in the corner!
The second room we went into looked like it had been designed by the White Witch of Narnia. It was all whites and very sparkly.
If it was in my budget, one or both of these deer would have come home with me.
Other side of the White Witch's room...
Awesome vases in a cabinet...
I thought these benches were really cool and someday if I have an amazing log cabin out in the wilderness, I might get some just like them.
The White Witch may have had something to do with this bedroom too... it was wintry, though the bed linens were quite light (except for the faux bear!)...
And there was plenty of sparkle and glitter. I'm not much of a sparkly glitter girl, but I really loved the adorned branches in the vase at left in the photo below.
I thought these map bottles were really cool...
I loved this candle holder and the neighboring lamp, which is finished with capiz shells.
An awesome door (or set of doors?) on the way out...
We also went to Chartreuse and Company, but for some reason I didn't take any pictures there. They have the house on the property decorated for Christmas this time of year and the second floor of the main barn was open this time. It was awesome up there!

I got prizes at both places, as did Mom, but I'll share what I got another time as this post is already pretty long.

If you are a NoVa resident and like what you see here, I highly recommend a visit to either or both of these places. Here are links to their websites: Lucketts Store / Chartreuse and Company.

Walking in a... rainy, wet winterland...

Like I said yesterday, my Mum came to visit this past weekend. We filled up pretty much every moment she was here and it was a lot of fun!

She flew in Thursday night and on Friday we got up and headed out to a few of our favorite shops, which were all decked out for Christmas. Below is the front of the Lucketts Design House. I'm actually going to save the rest of the photos about this for a post tomorrow.
After we enjoyed the shops, we headed north to Philly to see my sister. We got to Philly and stopped at her townhouse first to pick her up and then we all jumped on the metro to head to the Christmas Village next to Philly's City Hall.We browsed at some of the smaller shops, but spent most of our time at the big tent of Kathe Wohlfahrt, which I spoke about on Monday.

Right nearby City Hall is the LOVE sculpture, which is usually backed by a fountain, but this time of year is accompanied by the tree seen below.
After the Christmas Village, we walked to a place called Nodding Head for dinner. We all tried something new, including fried mac and cheese on the appetizer platter, which was delicious!
They had a crazy collection of bobble heads at the restaurant.
After dinner we walked around a bit more, including past where my sister works as a carpentry apprentice- The Walnut Street Theatre. Most of her time is actually spent offsite building set pieces, but this is where it all comes together. On Saturday we got up and had a great breakfast at the hotel (one of the main reasons Mom chose the place she did) and then my sister and I took a dip in the pool before we headed out for the day.

After we got back to the room from the pool, I received a text message from my husband with the following picture. Below the picture the text read: "This is disgusting! I'll be in the car driving to Florida if you need me!" He's not such a fan of snow.It was raining in Philly when we headed out, but that didn't deter us from our plans. Our first stop was Macy's for their light show. This is at the end when they light everything up, but the show includes several stories, including about the Nutcracker and his princess and Rudolph and his nose. After Macy's we walked to Reading Terminal Market for lunch. I had a great slice of pizza, my Mom had veggie lasagna, and my sister had meat lasagna. All were delicious!

By the time we left the market, it had begun to snow in Philly. The flakes were large and wet, which would have been fine if the wind hadn't whipped through the buildings and caused them to be mean little snow pellets!

On the way back to the subway, we stopped for one of the most important parts of the trip: hot chocolate. It was one of the things we were looking forward to doing, especially with the snow and cold weather. We all got peppermint flavored with whipped cream and it really hit the spot. When we got back to Karen's townhouse and were ready to leave, my car was waiting for us covered in slushy snow. Fortunately, the weather wasn't too cold, so everything was really just wet, not too icy.On Sunday, Mom and I ended the awesome weekend with church and breakfast at Panera Bread. I love their cheese pastry.
